Learning Objectives
- Diagnose the patient with a condition that requires Total hip Arthroplasty
- Design a custom hip implant for your assigned patient
- Create a solid model of your implant in Autodesk Inventor
- Write a computer program that can analyze design parameters
- Explain why your design meets the needs of your patient
What I Did
- Worked with team and expert from McMaster Children’s Hospital to diagnose patient based on symptoms and x-rays
- Helped develop a need statement in order to focus potential design ideas
- Created a preliminary sketch outlining the features of a possible implant as they related to patient anatomy
- Participated in a session to critique team designs and determine a final design
- Calculated the magnitude of bone stress reduction with a titanium implant
- Individually researched and selected an appropriate material for the femoral head component of implant
- Collaborated with team to determine ideal materials for all components of implant
- Designed and modeled features for implant in Autodesk Inventor
- Worked with team to design and create a poster board
- Participated in a ten minute oral presentation
Outcome

The final 3D printed implant prototype.
