Need Statement

Design a long-lasting hip replacement for Djimon Hounsou to reduce pain, prevent further dislocation, and increase range of motion allowing him to return to swimming and playing basketball.

Femoral Stem and Acetabular Cup* - Ti-6Al-4V (Titanium-Aluminum-Vanadium alloy)

*hydroxyapatite will be applied as a coating to these components in order to encourage osseointegration

- crystalline metal with metallic bonding - elastic modulus 114GPa - UTS 1170MPa - fracture toughness 43MPa - corrosion resistant - undergoes the Kroll Process Very strong material that’s able to support weight of the hip. Lightweight and biocompatible.

Acetabular Lining - Cross-linked Polyethylene (XLPE)

- polymer with linked backbone chains - elastic modulus 0.6GPa - UTS 18MPa - decreased fracture toughness by cross-linking - corrosion resistant - cross-linking the polyethylene dramatically improves strength Has been confirmed to extend life of implants. Is a high strength polymer with a low coefficient of friction.

Acetabular Lining - Beeswax Coating

- crystalline - long hydrocarbon chains and esters - elastic modulus 39MPa - UTS 526kPa - fracture toughness depends on temperature - when heated to 30-35 degrees Celsius, it attains the properties of plastic Biocompatible material that will increase lubrication, wear resistance, and durability of lining.

Femoral Head - Polyetherimide (PEI) Reinforced with Glass Fibers

- amorphous composite polymer - long glass fibres embedded in PEI matrix - elastic modulus 15GPa - UTS 181MPa - highly resistant to fracture - corrosion resistant - pultrusion process incorporates glass fibers Very strong material will be able to support the weight required. High wear resistance.

Femoral Head - Gold-Platinum Alloy Coating
